Communicating Ideas š”
Being a consultant means tackling very difficult and challenging problems.
It means that you are often doing mental gymnastics with some theoretical and quantitative concepts.
Your ability to think through these ideas and process the qualitative and quantitative elements is crucial to being a great consultant. You must learn all of this, but they represent only one part of the equation.
The other part of the equation is about communicating these ideas clearly and concisely.
Letās go deeper on this.
Throughout your education at university, where most of you reading this probably graduated in Commerce or a quant-heavy degree, most of your time was spent thinking, analyzing, and putting together your facts.
The problem is that most of you havenāt learned how to communicate these complex ideas in a simple manner. You were never truly graded on how well you communicated these ideas orally.
Communicating in Consulting
Firms emphasize the importance of being a clear communicator. At McKinsey, itās literally something that BAs are graded on during their annual reviews.
How well can you communicate ideas to your team and client?
To be a clear communicator in consulting, you must STRUCTURED.
Structured in your thoughts, structured in the way you break things down, and structured in how you present these things.
Thatās really the secret to it all.
For consultants, simple questions such as āhow are you doingā can be broken down into complex answers! (half kidding).
From now on, I want you to do two things:
Always structure your thoughts
Always communicate by following a logical structure
Hereās an example
You want to know if Company A should buy company B.
You could start saying yes I think they should because theres this and that and something elseā¦
This is how most people think - completely disorganized in their thoughts and its an automatic rejection for consulting firms.
Or, you could structure your thought:
āI think it may make sense for A to acquire B because firstly, X, then Y, and finally, Z⦠So overall, it seems like a good idea that could generate X% in returns.ā
You see how much more structure this is and how much more credible it sounds?
Thatās how you should aim to become in your every day life. Make it a habit!

If you made it this far, take 3 seconds to answer this (or the consulting Gods will never give you an offer)
